How India Beats the Heat: Instamart's 2026 Summer Ordering Trends Reveal the Nation's Cooling Rituals

As Indian summers intensify, a predictable pattern emerges: households pivot to established cooling rituals rather than experimenting with new products. Instamart's Summer Trends 2026 report documents this seasonal shift, revealing which items dominate shopping carts when temperatures soar and how consumption patterns align closely with the calendar.

The data tells a clear story. As March and April brought rising heat, orders in summer categories jumped dramatically, with leading products experiencing week-on-week growth of up to 300%. Mangoes, chilled coffees, carbonated beverages, and frozen fruit bars all saw significant spikes. Cooling appliances including fans and air coolers recorded growth exceeding 280%, while summer accessories such as sunglasses topped all categories with 650% year-on-year growth.

Summer Spending Across India's Major Cities

Individual shopping patterns highlight regional intensity in beating the heat. A consumer in Guntur invested ₹15,005 in summer essentials, with energy drinks and rechargeable portable fans dominating the purchase. Central Goa saw one shopper spend ₹11,672 on coconut water, kulfi, mangoes, and cool beverages—essentially creating a portable beachside menu. Bengaluru's highest summer spender exceeded ₹11,000 through repeated purchases of chilled coffee, buttermilk, mangoes, ice cream, and yogurt. Hyderabad's top cart surpassed ₹11,000 with ice cream, mangoes, cool drinks, and buttermilk, while Kolkata's leading summer shopper spent over ₹10,600 on coconut water, mangoes, yogurt, and ice cream.

Yogurt's Unexpected Dominance

Yogurt has emerged as summer's most-ordered product, nearly equalling cold drinks and ice cream in volume. Remarkably, six of the ten most-ordered items contain curd as a base ingredient, pointing to a strong preference for traditional cooling dairy products. Beyond dairy, watermelon and muskmelon are gaining momentum, suggesting consumers increasingly favour fresh, uncomplicated options rooted in everyday consumption patterns.

The 9 PM Ice Cream Phenomenon

One habit unites India's cities: ice cream consumption peaks at 9 PM. This post-dinner indulgence occurs with striking consistency across regions, with demand during the 6–9 PM window more than doubling compared to other hours. Weekends amplify this pattern further. The purchasing behaviour indicates deliberate planning rather than impulse buying, with family-sized containers leading sales, followed by cones, sticks, bars, cups, and kulfi.

Chocolate dominates flavour preferences, accounting for nearly one in four ice cream orders—substantially ahead of vanilla, butterscotch, and seasonal mango varieties.

Beyond Metropolitan Limits

While Bangalore holds the title of India's ice cream capital, followed by Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Kochi, and Gurgaon, the data reveals an important nuance. Smaller cities including Central Goa, Thrissur, Thiruvalla, Nagercoil, and Manipal record higher orders per user, demonstrating that summer indulgence extends beyond major metropolitan centres with equal—or greater—intensity.

Mango Season's Early Start

The mango craze has already begun, though Alphonso season remains in early stages. Sindhu mangoes lead current orders, with Banganapalli and raw mangoes close behind, proving India's mango appetite awakens before premium varieties reach peak availability. Festival periods around Ugadi and Gudi Padwa catalyse initial demand, which then persists through school holidays.

Growth patterns show metros maintain volume leadership, yet cities like Kozhikode, Madurai, Trichy, Vizag, and Nellore are expanding fastest. Bengaluru's mango consumption outpaces Hyderabad and Chennai combined, while smaller cities such as Thanjavur, Pondicherry, and Mangaluru demonstrate serious commitment to the fruit. Delhi and Gurgaon complete the top ten mango-consuming cities.

Beverage Evolution: Flavour Over Fizz

This summer marks a shift in drinking preferences. Jeera masala sodas, chilled coffees, and café-style coolers transition from specialty items to regular evening purchases. Functional and zero-sugar beverages are gaining traction. Jeera masala soda orders jumped 900% in March, while chilled coffee surged nearly 700%. Coconut water, buttermilk, lassi, and milkshakes all recorded substantial growth. Like ice cream, beverage demand peaks during the 6–9 PM window.

Regional Variations Within National Patterns

While yogurt remains consistent across India, city-specific preferences shape the remainder of summer baskets. Ahmedabad and Rajkot favour buttermilk, ice cream, and soft drinks. Bengaluru and Mumbai lean toward fruit-heavy selections featuring watermelon and muskmelon. Chandigarh identifies lassi as a key summer staple. Chennai and Kochi prioritize muskmelon and watermelon. Delhi and Lucknow centre consumption around buttermilk. Hyderabad and Pune maintain balanced combinations of fruits, yogurt, and beverages.
