India's AI Workforce Set to Expand, But Supply Falls Short of Growing Demand
India's artificial intelligence workforce is poised for substantial growth, with projections indicating the talent pool will reach 1.25 million professionals by 2027. However, industry forecasts suggest demand will considerably exceed this supply figure, creating a meaningful skills gap in the sector.
The market dynamics are evident in compensation trends. Senior and lead data science roles now regularly command salaries above ₹40 LPA, particularly within multinational corporations and consulting organisations. While this reflects strong market appetite, it simultaneously underscores a fundamental challenge: a shortage of skilled professionals capable of moving beyond technical proficiency to design, evaluate, and implement AI solutions within genuine business frameworks.
This disparity has opened substantial pathways for data and technology professionals prepared to develop capabilities beyond introductory levels. In response to these market conditions, IIT Delhi's Continuing Education Programme has commenced admissions for the twelfth cohort of its Certificate Programme in Data Science, AI & Machine Learning—an initiative previously titled the Certificate Programme in Data Science and Machine Learning. The launch reflects sustained confidence in market relevance and professional demand.
The programme's timing proves particularly significant given recent curriculum enhancements. The updated offering now incorporates instruction on Generative AI and Large Language Models, addressing a landscape where competencies including Agentic AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation are rapidly transitioning from specialised expertise to fundamental requirements.
Participants completing the certification will gain proficiency across several core competencies: constructing predictive models utilising neural networks and time series forecasting techniques; acquiring practical knowledge of machine learning algorithms alongside their underlying statistical foundations; developing comprehensive expertise in methodologies such as regression, clustering, decision tree analysis, and deep learning frameworks; and employing optimisation strategies to reduce prediction errors and construct high-performance systems.
The programme derives authority from IIT Delhi's established academic standards, with the institution ranked second nationally in Engineering according to NIRF 2025 rankings. Learner satisfaction metrics reinforce its credibility, with programme alumni reporting satisfaction ratings of 4.45 out of 5.
Prof. Hariprasad Kodamana from IIT Delhi articulates the underlying philosophy: "We are at a point where understanding AI is no longer enough. Professionals need to build the capability to apply these technologies in dynamic business environments. Structured learning plays a critical role in bridging this gap."
The broader implication is straightforward: forthcoming career advancement in technology sectors will depend less on tool availability and more on practitioners' capacity to deploy those tools effectively toward meaningful business outcomes. Within a marketplace characterised by numerous unstructured learning alternatives, programmes combining institutional credibility with practical implementation focus distinguish themselves. For professionals adapting to this transformation, the objective extends beyond maintaining relevance—it encompasses acquiring the AI competency required to drive forthcoming waves of organisational innovation.
