Johns Hopkins University honours former Indian Defence Minister with dedicated terrace at Bologna campus

Johns Hopkins University's prestigious School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has unveiled a significant tribute to the late Dr. Mallikarjun, a former Defence Minister of India, by naming a newly constructed terrace at its Bologna campus in his honour.
The "Dr. Mallikarjun Terrace" serves as an extension of the university's infrastructure and will function as a gathering space for SAIS students, faculty, visiting scholars, and dignitaries. The terrace will also be accessible to the general public.
Dr. Mallikarjun's political journey began as a student leader during the Telangana agitation of 1969. He went on to hold several ministerial positions at the national level, including Defence and Railways portfolios. His parliamentary career spanned six terms—two representing Medak and four representing Mahabubnagar. In his later years, he established and led the Congress Forum for Telangana, advancing the cause of statehood for the region, a commitment that defined much of his decades-long public service.
The connection between Dr. Mallikarjun and Johns Hopkins runs deeper than his political legacy. He studied medicine at Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, aligning with the university's prominence in medical research and global scholarship.
The initiative to honour Dr. Mallikarjun came through his son, Manu Mallikarjun, who completed his MA in International Relations at SAIS. During his studies at the Bologna campus, Manu served as an elected member of the Student Government Association in his first year before continuing his education in Washington, D.C. for his second year.
The plaque unveiling ceremony took place at the Bologna campus in the presence of SAIS Europe Rector Renaud Dehousse and several of Manu's classmates. In his remarks, Manu reflected on the significance of the gesture, stating that it demonstrates "we are human, before we are nations and peoples. It may be symbolic, but it is etched in stone."
The memorial plaque reads: "In memory of former Minister and Member of the Indian Parliament Dr. Mallikarjun (1941-2002), whose dedication to public service and leadership—a journey that began at Osmania Medical College where he served as Students' Union President—endures as a source of inspiration."
