HYDRAA Initiates Restoration of Four Lakes Across Hyderabad

Hyderabad's urban water management authority has begun a significant restoration initiative across four water bodies in the city. Announced on Thursday, the project encompasses Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu in Ibrahim Bagh, Bhageerathamma Cheruvu in Puppalaguda, Kamuni Cheruvu in Moosapet, and Kapra Cheruvu in Kapra.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath formally inaugurated the works, conducting ceremonial groundbreaking at Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu and Kamuni Cheruvu. The combined investment of ₹107 crore targets three primary objectives: minimizing urban flooding, enhancing groundwater recharge, and revitalizing these water bodies.

The restoration scope varies across the four sites. Ibrahim Pedda Cheruvu encompasses 97 acres, while Bhageerathamma Cheruvu covers 54 acres. Kamuni Cheruvu spans 48 acres, and Kapra Cheruvu extends across 112 acres, totalling 311 acres of restoration work.

Community members participated in the launch event, expressing appreciation for the initiative. They highlighted potential benefits including resolution of sewage-related issues, reduction in mosquito populations, and environmental improvements to surrounding areas.

Commissioner Ranganath emphasized several priorities for the restoration efforts. He instructed contractors to comprehensively remove silt accumulation from all lakes and eliminate persistent foul odours. The restoration framework must strengthen flood management infrastructure while simultaneously raising groundwater levels, he stated. Additionally, the authority aims to establish an environmentally sustainable ecosystem around each water body.

Technical specifications include developing proper inlet and outlet systems to facilitate efficient floodwater movement. Ranganath directed contractors to maintain quality standards consistent with the initial phase, which addressed six lakes previously. Project completion should proceed without compromising construction quality.

Beyond water management, the restoration incorporates recreational and public amenities. Planned facilities include walkways, open-air gymnasiums, and children's play areas around the lakes, designed to serve residents across all age groups. The government is also exploring boating facilities at larger lakes in partnership with the Tourism Department, pending further development.

Local residents have been encouraged to actively support the restoration efforts to ensure successful project completion.
