Hyderabad's flood management authority HYDRAA is stepping up its efforts to prevent waterlogging in Krishna Nagar as the monsoon approaches, launching an aggressive campaign to clear accumulated sediment from drainage systems across the locality.

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath conducted an inspection of desilting operations in Krishna Nagar, which falls within the Jubilee Hills constituency, on Saturday. The visit revealed that clogged stormwater drains and layers of silt buildup represent the primary culprits behind seasonal flooding in the area.

According to officials, stormwater drains measuring roughly 10 feet in depth have accumulated up to seven feet of silt, significantly reducing their capacity to handle heavy rainfall. Ranganath instructed the teams to accelerate the removal of these deposits, which have accumulated over decades, and coordinate closely with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to ensure seamless progress.

The commissioner expressed concern over project delays and emphasized the need to complete the work before the rainy season sets in. He also instructed contractors to eliminate any obstacles that have been impeding the clearance operations.

Safety measures have been incorporated into the mitigation strategy. Ranganath directed contractors to install iron grills at locations where slabs have been removed during desilting work, a step intended to protect the public and prevent mishaps.

Looking ahead, Ranganath indicated that HYDRAA plans to construct a major stormwater drain to manage floodwater from the Venkatagiri area. However, authorities will seek expert consultation before proceeding with work near Metro pillars and major thoroughfares.

During the same visit, the commissioner also reviewed flood management systems around Malkam Cheruvu near the Shaikpet-Gachibowli main road. He identified deficiencies in the lake's inlet and outlet mechanisms, including issues with the sluice gate that regulates water levels.

Ranganath instructed officials to complete desilting of the inlet channel within seven days and to widen the outlet sluice gate while lowering its position to enhance water discharge efficiency. He also recommended employing robotic technology to extract silt from underground pipelines running beneath the main road.

The inspection was attended by HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah alongside representatives from the Irrigation Department, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and GHMC.
