Hyderabad's water protection agency has rolled out a sweeping CCTV surveillance initiative aimed at safeguarding the city's lakes from unauthorized land use and environmental violations.

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Authority (HYDRAA) switched on the monitoring system on Monday, with Commissioner A.V. Ranganath presiding over the launch. The infrastructure links approximately 900 cameras positioned around various lakes directly to a central command facility at HYDRAA headquarters, enabling real-time observation of suspicious activities.

The surveillance network represents a significant upgrade to existing lake protection mechanisms. Operators stationed at the monitoring center will watch live video feeds displayed on dedicated screens, allowing them to observe patterns indicative of illegal dumping, debris disposal, and unauthorized construction near water bodies.

The system's capabilities extend beyond simple observation. When officials spot vehicles engaged in soil dumping activities, the cameras can capture identifying information that enables Lake Protection Teams—already stationed across monitored areas—to respond swiftly and take preventive action.

HYDRAA has further expanded the network's reach by connecting camera feeds to monitors at the Integrated Command and Control Centre located in Banjara Hills, creating a multi-layered surveillance architecture. According to Commissioner Ranganath, this integration strengthens the agency's overall ability to detect and respond to threats against the city's water resources.

While Lake Protection Teams have previously maintained presence in vulnerable areas, officials acknowledge that the camera network substantially enhances detection and response capabilities. The initiative reflects growing efforts to combat environmental degradation affecting Hyderabad's lake ecosystem.

HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papaiah and Additional Commissioner R Sudarshan participated in the inauguration ceremony.
