Hyderabad Zoo Reports Over 90 Animal Births, Strengthens Conservation Legacy

Hyderabad's Nehru Zoological Park has witnessed an exceptional breeding year, with more than 90 animals born over the past twelve months. The milestone underscores the institution's commitment to wildlife preservation and evidence-based animal husbandry practices.

Among the most celebrated arrivals are six lion cubs—three African lions and three Asiatic lions—currently receiving specialized veterinary care. The births have expanded the zoo's total lion population from 17 to 23 animals, now comprising five African lions and 18 Asiatic lions including the newborns.

The breeding programme has also yielded six Bengal tiger cubs, consisting of three white tigers and three yellow Bengal tigers. The zoo's tiger population now stands at 20 animals across both varieties.

Zoo officials attribute the reproductive success to coordinated management strategies, including genetic exchange initiatives with zoological institutions across the country. These partnerships help maintain genetic health within the big cat populations.

Beyond the larger carnivores, the zoo has documented significant breeding across other species. The past year saw the arrival of more than 18 mouse deer fawns, eight blackbucks, and two hog deer fawns. The most recent three months added four ostrich chicks, three fox pups, two golden pheasant chicks, one four-horned antelope calf, and one sambar deer fawn.

Zoo Curator J. Vasantha highlighted the institution's particular distinction in mouse deer conservation. Since 2010, the zoo has successfully bred over 500 mouse deer, many of which have been relocated to tiger reserves including Amrabad and Kawal to support broader ecological restoration efforts.

The curator attributed the breeding achievements to rigorous scientific protocols and consistent animal welfare standards maintained throughout the facility. These practices have positioned Hyderabad Zoo as a recognized leader in India's conservation landscape.
