Hyderabad's law enforcement agencies have undertaken a coordinated anti-drug screening initiative focused on rowdy sheeters, troublemakers, and individuals with prior involvement in narcotics cases across the metropolitan area.

The operation, executed on May 6 under the oversight of Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar, brought together H-NEW teams, Task Force personnel, and local police units. The effort sought to educate offenders about the legal ramifications and health consequences associated with substance abuse.

DCP Vibhav Raghunath Gaikwad and Additional DCP Ande Srinivas coordinated the initiative within the Charminar Zone, with medical professionals from Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital, and the Government Mental Health Hospital at Erragadda providing clinical support.

Screening Results Reveal Widespread Drug Use

The testing programme covered 204 individuals in total, with results revealing significant levels of drug consumption among the screened population.

At Gandhi Hospital, 41 people underwent screening, with 12 testing positive and 29 negative. Osmania General Hospital screened a larger cohort of 90 individuals, yielding 52 positive results and 38 negative outcomes. The mental health facility at Erragadda tested 73 people, identifying 23 positive cases and 50 negative cases.

Across all three locations, 87 individuals tested positive for drug use, while 117 tested negative.

Following positive test results, psychiatrists conducted counselling sessions with affected individuals, discussing the detrimental health impacts of substance abuse and the importance of seeking rehabilitation support.

Police authorities indicated they would file cases against those who tested positive in accordance with applicable legal provisions. The department emphasised that H-NEW and Task Force operations against drug-related offences would intensify across the city going forward.

Officials also called upon residents to distance themselves from narcotics and contribute to community efforts aimed at ensuring public safety and wellbeing.
