Hyderabad Man Arrested for Tampering with Scooter Registration to Dodge Traffic Fines

Hyderabad authorities have arrested a 24-year-old man for modifying the registration number on his two-wheeler to circumvent traffic enforcement and escape financial penalties.
Syed Omer Ahmed, residing in Natraj Nagar, Jhirra, was taken into custody by teams from both the Hyderabad city traffic police and the Tappachabutra police station. Investigations revealed that he had deliberately altered the registration details on his Honda Activa scooter.
The accused modified the vehicle's original registration number TS12EP8323 to TS12EB8323. According to police, this change was designed to help him avoid traffic challans and remain undetected during enforcement operations.
The tampering created complications for other vehicle owners. Traffic violations attributed to Ahmed's scooter were instead recorded against the legitimate holder of the altered registration number, resulting in challans being issued to an innocent person.
Authorities discovered the scheme through collaborative investigation work between the Hyderabad Traffic Police and local police officials at Tappachabutra. Following their findings, a criminal case was registered and the accused was arrested.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that operating a vehicle with a fake or altered number plate constitutes a serious criminal offence under both the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act. They stressed that such violations would face stringent legal action.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police indicated that they employ sophisticated technological tools to combat such violations, including CCTV surveillance networks and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. These technologies enable them to identify vehicles with fake or tampered plates and monitor their activities.
The traffic police have also called on the public to report suspected registration number misuse. Citizens can lodge complaints through the Telangana e-Challan portal, the designated email helpdesk, or the traffic police WhatsApp helpline.
