Hyderabad Authorities Arrest Driver for Operating Two-Wheeler with Fraudulent Registration Plate

A two-wheeler operator in Hyderabad has been arrested for using a counterfeit number plate, authorities announced following an investigation triggered by complaints of unauthorized traffic violations.

The Khairatabad Police department apprehended D. Robert Shamyul, 41, a resident of Anand Nagar Colony in Khairatabad, after discovering he had affixed a duplicate registration number to his Hero Destini scooter. The discovery came to light when traffic enforcement officials were examining irregularities in issued traffic challans.

The case originated when T. Sreekanth, a resident of Bourampet in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, lodged a complaint with Hyderabad Traffic Police regarding repeated traffic challans issued against his Hero Destini scooter bearing registration number TS08HS7658. Sreekanth reported financial hardship resulting from these violations issued against his vehicle.

Upon investigation, police determined that Shamyul had duplicated the same registration plate and installed it on his own Hero Destini scooter. Authorities allege that he employed this fraudulent plate to evade traffic penalties and obstruct enforcement operations.

The Khairatabad Police registered FIR No. 118/2026 invoking Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Additionally, authorities issued a notice to the accused under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.

Officials stated that investigations into the matter remain ongoing, with Khairatabad Police and Hyderabad Traffic Police coordinating their efforts throughout the probe.

Law enforcement authorities emphasized that fabricating, duplicating, or altering vehicle registration plates constitute serious criminal offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act. The police department indicated that stringent legal consequences will be applied to those found guilty of such violations.

Traffic authorities noted that modern surveillance infrastructure, including CCTV networks and Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology deployed across the city, has proven instrumental in identifying counterfeit plates and tracking vehicle movements.

Vehicle owners have been advised to promptly report any suspected unauthorized use of their registration numbers through available channels, including the e-challan portal, official email communications, or the WhatsApp helpline maintained by traffic authorities.
