Congress Maps Out Old City Push for Hyderabad Municipal Elections

Hyderabad's Congress party leadership gathered at Gandhi Bhavan on April 27 to chart out its electoral strategy for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation polls, with particular focus on consolidating strength in the Old City.
The District Congress Committee convened more than 100 party office-bearers for an extended working session that stretched five and a half hours, from 4 pm to 9.30 pm, combining strategic discussions with ideological orientation. A notable departure from typical review meetings, the gathering allocated time for each participant to voice their perspectives on organisational matters.
The discussions centred on voter engagement challenges specific to Old City constituencies. Party members identified depressed voter participation and fragmented opposition votes as factors that had shaped electoral outcomes in several segments. Strengthening booth-level presence and boosting turnout emerged as priority areas, alongside efforts to widen the party's appeal in constituencies where it faces stiff competition.
Syed Khalid Saifullah, the Hyderabad DCC president, used the occasion to underscore the Indian National Congress's foundational principles of inclusive governance, social justice and equitable representation. He called on party workers to deepen their connection with voters through sustained community engagement while pursuing strategic political initiatives to broaden the party's footprint in difficult areas.
The session also examined ways to sharpen coordination between local party units and intensify outreach to younger voters and women. Senior party figures emphasised the importance of consistent messaging around party policies to strengthen ties with the electorate.
As the meeting concluded, party leaders voiced optimism that a well-coordinated campaign structure could enhance Congress's performance in the forthcoming civic elections, with ground-level mobilisation identified as the critical next step.
