Himayat Sagar Opens Floodgates as Rainfall Boosts Reservoir Inflows

Hyderabad's Himayat Sagar reservoir saw its floodgates opened on Sunday evening as heavy rainfall across the catchment area drove up inflows significantly. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board activated the gates at 6 pm, directing floodwater into the Musi River to maintain safe reservoir levels.

The decision came following rainfall predictions from the India Meteorological Department and the surge in incoming water volumes, which officials deemed sufficient to warrant precautionary discharge measures. Water Board authorities began releasing approximately 1,000 cusecs of floodwater initially, with plans to adjust discharge rates based on incoming flow volumes.

Officials indicated that additional gates could be opened or discharge volumes increased if inflows continued their upward trajectory. Continuous monitoring of incoming water was established to track changing conditions in real time.

Water Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy convened an emergency meeting with senior officials following the gate opening to coordinate response efforts. He emphasised ensuring minimal disruption for residents situated downstream of the reservoir.

Coordination efforts expanded across multiple agencies, with the Water Board alerting field personnel and establishing communication channels with district administrations covering Hyderabad and Rangareddy. Teams from HYDRAA and GHMC were mobilised to maintain surveillance at high-risk locations along the river course.

The Police Department was also brought into the coordination structure to manage traffic and facilitate the relocation of residents from vulnerable zones along the Musi River where necessary.

Public advisories were issued urging residents in low-lying areas and along the river to remain vigilant. Authorities recommended that people avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the heightened water discharge period.
