Death Toll Climbs as Severe Heatwave Grips Telugu States

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are reeling from a deadly heatwave, with 77 fatalities reported in a single day as scorching temperatures continue to sweep across the region.
The two Telugu states have been gripped by intense heat, with thermometers climbing to approximately 45 degrees Celsius in multiple locations. The oppressive conditions have left residents struggling to endure the extreme weather.
According to reports available on Monday, the toll included 52 deaths in Telangana and 25 in Andhra Pradesh, all attributed to heat stroke and severe weather exposure. State officials had not yet released an official consolidated statement regarding the fatalities at the time of reporting.
Preliminary assessments from ground-level sources suggest that between 200 and 300 people may have succumbed to heat-related causes across both states over the preceding week. These figures remain unverified by official channels.
The India Meteorological Department has signaled that the dangerous heat may persist for several more days, with the possibility of temperatures rising even further in certain districts across the region.
In response, disaster management authorities in both states have issued alerts urging citizens to exercise caution. Health officials have specifically advised vulnerable populations—including senior citizens, pregnant women, and young children—to minimize outdoor exposure except when absolutely essential.
Authorities have identified the 11 am to 4 pm window as the period of greatest heat intensity, recommending that people remain indoors during these peak afternoon hours.
Medical professionals are encouraging residents to maintain consistent hydration throughout the day. They also recommend consuming buttermilk and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) as preventative measures against dehydration and heat stroke-related complications.
