Hyderabad Food Safety Team Shuts Down Illegal Fast-Food Operation in Charminar, Seizes Contaminated Stock

Hyderabad's food safety authorities have shut down an unauthorised fast-food warehouse operation following a comprehensive inspection that revealed multiple violations and dangerous practices.

The Hyderabad Food Adulteration Surveillance Team (H-FAST), working alongside a Food Safety Officer, descended on M/s Al Akbar Fast Food and Godown located in Panch Mohalla, New Lad Bazaar, within the Hussaini Alam police station jurisdiction. The operation was triggered by specific intelligence received by the team.

During their inspection, officials uncovered serious lapses in food safety protocols. The establishment lacked the mandatory FSSAI licence required to operate legally. Investigators documented the facility's use of prohibited artificial food colours, specifically MSK Lion Green and Raspberry Red, in food preparation.

The team discovered that cooking oil was being recycled repeatedly despite deterioration, a practice that poses significant health risks. Additionally, the premises failed to maintain water quality certifications and other essential quality control documentation. Inspectors noted the absence of pest control measures and documented severe hygiene violations throughout the facility.

Officials confiscated approximately 110 kilograms of prepared fried chicken, six containers of cooking oil totalling 15 litres, and stocks of artificial chemical food colouring agents. Two individuals managing the illegal operation were taken into custody.

Health authorities emphasised the serious consequences of consuming adulterated food products. Such contaminated items can trigger food poisoning, nausea, and diarrhoeal illnesses, potentially leading to gastrointestinal infections. Repeated consumption of food prepared in deteriorated oil may result in chronic health complications, while artificial food colours can provoke allergic reactions and other adverse health effects, with prolonged exposure potentially damaging liver function and elevating disease risks.

Police have registered charges at Hussaini Alam Police Station under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and applicable legislation. The accused individuals and seized materials have been transferred to the Station House Officer for further proceedings.

City police reiterated their strict stance against food adulteration and advised the public to purchase food exclusively from licensed vendors.
