Godrej Pet Care Brings Ninja Dog Food to Four Southern States, Targeting Emerging Market

Godrej Pet Care, the pet nutrition arm of Godrej Consumer Products Ltd., has rolled out its Ninja dog food brand across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala, following early market success in Tamil Nadu. The product line features scientifically formulated nutrition designed to strengthen canine gut health and immune function.
The Ninja range incorporates probiotics, prebiotics, and polyphenols—a combination the company terms its "3P blend"—alongside 37 balanced nutrients. The formulation addresses what the company identifies as a critical gap in India's pet care landscape, where gastrointestinal issues account for nearly 30% of veterinary visits.
India's pet care market stands at approximately ₹6,000 crore, with pet food representing ₹5,000 crore of that figure. Despite rising pet ownership—currently around 10% of Indians—only one in ten pet owners purchase packaged food products, and those who do use them for just 40% of feeding occasions. The calorie conversion rate in India sits at 5%, significantly lower than China's 25%, though China had comparable pet ownership levels 15 years ago.
South India commands an estimated ₹1,800–2,000 crore share of the national pet food market. Karnataka leads the region with 15% of India's total pet food sales, trailed by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at 8%, Tamil Nadu at 8%, and Kerala at 5%.
Godrej Pet Care was established in 2024 through a merger of animal nutrition capabilities from Godrej Agrovet with the brand and distribution infrastructure of Godrej Consumer Products. The company operates the Nadir Godrej Centre for Animal Research & Development.
Nitin Jain, Chief Operating Officer of Godrej Pet Care, stated that South India represents a substantial growth opportunity. "Godrej Pet Care is democratising the pet food category by offering great quality product at an affordable price-point than those available in the market," he said. The company plans to invest ₹500 crore in pet care expansion over the coming years.
Bengaluru emerges as the region's most developed pet food market, with residents spending 25% more on pet nutrition than any other Indian city. "Karnataka is the largest pet food market in South India," Jain noted. "The city alone has 25% higher spending on pet food compared to any other city in the country."
Dr. Ashok Pattanaik, Head of Research & Development at Godrej Pet Care and former Principal Scientist at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, highlighted the nutritional deficiencies in home-prepared dog meals. "Pet dogs need something equally complete," he explained. With nearly 70% of a dog's immune system concentrated in the gut, poor nutrition directly compromises immunity. The Ninja formulation targets these concerns through its targeted nutrient profile.
Ninja is manufactured and tested in India, available in both puppy and adult variants. Adult formulations are priced at ₹20 for 100 grams, ₹199 for 1 kilogram, and ₹499 for 3 kilograms. Puppy variants cost ₹20 for 100 grams, ₹219 for 1 kilogram, and ₹549 for 3 kilograms.
