GHMC Holds Workshop to Review Waste Management and Air Quality Initiatives

Hyderabad's municipal administration brought together key stakeholders on June 23 for a comprehensive review of its sanitation and environmental programmes. Held at the GHMC headquarters under the leadership of the Additional Commissioner (Sanitation), the workshop examined implementation of the SWM Rules 2026, Construction and Demolition Waste Rules, and the National Clean Air Programme.

Representatives from across the municipal corporation's circles presented updates on the 99-Day Action Plan, with particular emphasis on waste management efficiency and environmental compliance across the city. The gathering included Deputy Executive Engineers focused on solid waste management, the Project Manager for Swachh Bharat Mission, NCAP officials, EPTRI representatives, and delegates from waste management contractors including Ramky, C&D, Mclean and IXora.

The meeting examined the current state of Swachh Bharat Mission infrastructure projects, underscoring the urgency of completing works that remain pending. Officials also reviewed the handling of public complaints lodged through digital channels and WhatsApp, while discussing strategies to boost staff participation through the Facial Recognition System.

Strengthening collection mechanisms for electronic waste and bulky waste featured prominently in discussions, with officials emphasizing the need for better registration of facilities generating large quantities of garbage. The workshop highlighted the potential of Resident Welfare Associations as partners in advancing sanitation and waste management across residential areas.

Preparations for the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan survey and air quality enhancement measures formed another key agenda item. Participants reviewed approaches to elevate environmental performance and ensure compliance with NCAP standards throughout the city.

The Additional Commissioner instructed field-level officials to intensify efforts in collecting and processing waste through scientific methods while strengthening compliance with environmental regulations. Municipal officials indicated that these coordinated efforts aim to create cleaner urban spaces and advance sustainable development in Hyderabad.
