Hyderabad Nutrition Forum Examines Rice Bran Oil's Role in Preventive Healthcare

Hyderabad hosted a nutrition forum where GEF India partnered with the Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IAPEN India) Hyderabad Chapter to bring together medical professionals, nutritionists and industry stakeholders. The gathering centred on "Nutritional Insights and Everyday Value of Rice Bran Oil," with particular emphasis on how evidence-based dietary practices can support long-term health outcomes.
Consultant Nutritionist Dr. Matheen Asrar led discussions on the scientific foundations of dietary fats and practical strategies for healthier food selection. The forum highlighted the escalating health challenge posed by non-communicable diseases including cardiovascular conditions, diabetes and obesity, underscoring nutrition's preventive potential.
A key theme emerged around consumer decision-making: many households select cooking oils based on popular belief rather than scientific data. Participants advocated for reframing the conversation away from fat reduction toward selecting higher-quality fats consumed in appropriate quantities and within balanced eating patterns.
Dr. Matheen outlined the physiological necessity of fats for brain development, hormonal function, cellular integrity and nutrient absorption, emphasising that elimination proves counterproductive. Rice Bran Oil, she noted, contains monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids alongside bioactive compounds including oryzanol, tocopherols and tocotrienols, which research has examined for cholesterol management applications. The oil's elevated smoke point suits traditional Indian cooking techniques including deep frying and stir frying.
Research findings presented included a study documenting up to 12% LDL cholesterol reduction over four weeks following rice bran oil consumption. A meta-analysis encompassing 11 randomised controlled trials with 572 participants demonstrated reductions across LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, with benefits comparable to other unsaturated vegetable oils. Dr. Matheen cautioned, however, that oil selection works alongside balanced dietary patterns and physical activity as components of sustained wellness.
Dr. Asrar stated, "Sound nutrition emerges from informed decisions anchored in credible scientific evidence rather than misconceptions or fleeting dietary fashions. With abundant nutrition information available to consumers, distinguishing evidence-based facts from myths and adopting practical, balanced and sustainable dietary habits remains essential. Rice Bran Oil represents a cooking oil with well-established nutritional documentation and merits inclusion within a healthy diet. Yet enduring wellness flows from comprehensive dietary patterns, consistent exercise and sustained lifestyle choices rather than any isolated food or component."
Ms. Sujata Stephen, General Secretary of IAPEN Telangana Chapter, emphasised nutrition education's significance for population health and individual empowerment. "IAPEN Telangana remains dedicated to strengthening nutrition education by facilitating professional knowledge exchange and delivering practical dietary guidance to broader populations," she noted. "This collaboration with GEF India created an important forum for examining preventive nutrition, cooking practices and rice bran oil's nutritional benefits. We believe coordinated efforts among healthcare professionals, nutrition specialists and ethical industry collaborators substantially advance healthier lifestyles and sustained wellbeing."
Mr. Chetan Pimpalkhute, Marketing Head at Freedom Healthy Cooking Oils, observed that contemporary consumers increasingly seek trustworthy nutrition information supporting lifestyle improvements. "This forum aimed to demystify rice bran oil's science and communicate its nutritional relevance within balanced daily eating," he explained. "Freedom Rice Bran Oil demonstrates this commitment through its nutritional composition, featuring oryzanol exceeding 10,000 ppm alongside naturally present antioxidants including tocopherols and tocotrienols, positioning it as a practical everyday cooking option. By assembling prominent nutrition researchers and healthcare professionals, we endeavoured to strengthen nutrition literacy, inspire improved cooking practices and enable consumers to select foods with greater assurance."
Participants concluded by recommending a comprehensive health approach integrating balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and informed oil selection. Experts reiterated that individual foods or oils cannot independently guarantee health; sustainable wellness requires consistent lifestyle practices grounded in scientific understanding. The forum underscored GEF India and IAPEN India Hyderabad Chapter's shared commitment to strengthening nutrition literacy through evidence-informed professional dialogue, assembling nutrition specialists, healthcare leaders and industry representatives to reinforce science-based education's role in building healthier communities and enabling consumers to make confident dietary decisions.
