New Delhi: Ashoka University in the Delhi-NCR region hosted former President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday for the formal opening of a new student housing complex on its North Campus, underscoring the institution's continued expansion as a premier centre for higher learning in India.

The 14th President of India presided over the inauguration ceremony alongside key university figures, including Ashish Dhawan, Founding Chairperson of the Board of Trustees; Rudrangshu Mukherjee, Chancellor; Somak Raychaudhury, Vice-Chancellor; and senior administrative and academic staff. The day's events also featured a tree-planting ceremony where Savita Kovind and Ram Nath Kovind planted Rudraksha saplings, followed by a guided tour of the campus highlighting Ashoka's research capabilities and digital infrastructure, including the HDFC Library and the Archives of Contemporary India.

Speaking to the assembled gathering, Kovind praised the institution's standing. "I have toured educational establishments throughout India, and Ashoka University clearly ranks among the finest for its strategic vision and contemporary facilities," he remarked. "While our nation pursues broader access to quality education, fostering robust ethical principles and civic consciousness in young minds remains equally vital. These ideals permeate Ashoka's institutional character, and I am convinced the university will be instrumental in cultivating both intellectually capable and ethically grounded citizens."

The residential facility represents part of Ashoka's broader strategy to develop a fully residential campus environment capable of serving its student body, which now exceeds 3,000. Since its establishment, the university has built a reputation for rigorous academics, cross-disciplinary curricula, scholarly research, and professional development programmes. The institution achieved a significant international recognition milestone by appearing in the QS World University Rankings 2026 last year.

Vice-Chancellor Somak Raychaudhury commented on the occasion: "Having Shri Ram Nath Kovind inaugurate our latest residential facility represents a defining moment for Ashoka. As we continue modernising our physical campus and cultivating spaces that encourage intellectual exchange, peer learning, and comprehensive personal growth, his presence underscores the importance of these endeavours."

Dhawan emphasised the university's trajectory: "What began as a bold vision has matured into a dynamic academic community reshaping India's higher education landscape. With our continued growth, we anticipate welcoming substantially larger cohorts of students whilst deepening our commitment to fostering intellectual rigour, multidisciplinary inquiry, leadership cultivation, and residential community life."

During the visit, Kovind held discussions with senior faculty members and departmental deans regarding how private educational institutions can effectively contribute to delivering comprehensive academic programmes and state-of-the-art infrastructure that facilitates advanced research and technological innovation.
