Food Safety Inspection Uncovers Multiple Violations at Lulu Hypermarket in KPHB

Hyderabad's food safety authorities have uncovered significant violations at a Lulu Hypermarket location in KPHB following a complaint-based inspection.
The investigation revealed troubling conditions across the establishment's kitchen, retail, and butchering operations. In the in-house kitchen, inspectors documented inadequate sanitary standards and discovered stored leftover food in refrigerators, which was immediately discarded. The space also contained evidence of pest activity and rotting vegetables.
Inspectors also came across near-expiry packaged items bearing damaged and inaccurate labelling.
The retail section presented additional concerns, with inspectors detecting insect contamination in besan flour, atta, and dal stocks. Several packaged products carried outdated FSSAI registration information. Beyond this, the inspection team identified widespread non-compliance with labelling requirements, with numerous items missing mandatory nutritional data, manufacturer contact details, and current food safety authority credentials.
Conditions in the butchering area proved particularly problematic. Authorities found drainage systems blocked by meat residue, creating a strong odour that raised serious health and safety questions.
In total, food safety officials removed or destroyed nearly 150 kg of products spanning sweets, oils, flour, and pulses that showed signs of pest damage. The team also collected food samples suspected of containing adulterants, excessive artificial colouring, and pest contamination for testing at accredited laboratories.
The authorities have cautioned the public to exercise caution when purchasing food items from supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, and other retail establishments.
