Flipkart, Axis Bank, and PayU Roll Out Biometric Payment Authentication
Flipkart, Axis Bank, and PayU have jointly introduced biometric authentication capabilities for card transactions, marking a significant shift in how Indian consumers verify online purchases. The partnership enables customers to use fingerprint or Face ID recognition on Android and iOS devices, removing the need for traditional one-time passwords.
The feature is initially available to Axis Bank cardholders through issuer-level biometric verification. With this launch, Flipkart has positioned itself among India's leading e-commerce platforms offering such authentication technology for card payments.
The biometric approach provides enhanced security compared to conventional SMS-based verification methods. By incorporating device fingerprinting and additional security checks, the system reduces vulnerability to SIM-swap fraud and OTP-based attacks—issues that have plagued digital payment systems. The authentication mechanism is already familiar to smartphone users, potentially increasing adoption rates.
Under the arrangement, PayU handles the merchant-side infrastructure, managing device security and authentication protocols, while Axis Bank utilizes Wibmo—a PayU subsidiary—to manage biometric verification on the issuer end.
The initiative arrives as digital payment fraud has intensified significantly across India. According to Reserve Bank data, fraud losses exceeded ₹1,400 crore in FY 2024, representing a more than fivefold surge. In response, the Reserve Bank issued guidelines in 2025 encouraging financial institutions to adopt biometric and risk-based authentication methods rather than relying solely on SMS OTPs.
Gaurav Arora, Vice President of Payments and SuperCoins at Flipkart, emphasized that the integration reflects the company's commitment to embedding security into consumer payments. "By leveraging secure biometric credentials, we are delivering a payment experience that is intuitive and seamless, while meeting the highest standards of consumer protection," he stated.
Arnika Dixit, President and Head of Cards, Payments and Wealth Management at Axis Bank, noted that customers increasingly expect digital payments to balance convenience with security. "Biometric authentication delivers exactly that by enabling a secure, one-touch approval experience," she said, highlighting the partnership's role in advancing industry standards.
Hemang Dattani, Chief Business Officer at PayU Payments, described the collaboration as a meaningful advancement in simplifying payments without sacrificing security. "This partnership marks a meaningful step towards building a faster, more secure and frictionless digital payments experience for Indian consumers," he said.
The rollout represents a broader shift in India's digital payments ecosystem, moving away from SMS-based verification toward more sophisticated, device-bound authentication methods. Industry observers view this as a model that could support the next generation of secure digital transactions across the country.
