L V Prasad Eye Institute Opens New Centre for Eye and Brain Disorders in Hyderabad
Hyderabad has witnessed the opening of a specialized Eye and Brain Centre at the L V Prasad Eye Institute's Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, marking a significant development in the treatment of complex eye and neurological disorders. The facility was inaugurated with backing from D. E. Shaw India, with senior representatives from both organizations present at the ceremony.
The new centre represents an interdisciplinary effort combining expertise in neuroscience and ophthalmology. It will function as a hub for clinical services, research initiatives, diagnostic capabilities, and professional training programs addressing conditions at the intersection of eye and brain health. The infrastructure includes a fully operational neuro-ophthalmology clinic and diagnostic facility, a dedicated neuroscience laboratory equipped for genetic analysis, and artificial intelligence-powered systems for researching and diagnosing complex disorders affecting both eyes and brain.
A key objective of the initiative involves developing India's neuro-ophthalmology sector through structured training modules lasting from short-term to extended periods. The centre will also work to establish networks connecting ophthalmologists with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and optometrists to improve patient referral pathways and care coordination.
The partnership between the institute and D. E. Shaw India builds upon their existing collaboration aimed at enhancing access to quality eye care services across the country.
Dr. Ramesh Kekunnaya, who leads the Eye and Brain Centre at LVPEI, acknowledged the contribution during the inauguration event. "This centre fulfils a critical gap in eye-brain health, which remains largely neglected despite its importance," he stated. "It aligns with our commitment to deliver excellent and fair access to eye care services."
Chaitanya Gorrepati, Managing Director at D. E. Shaw India and member of both the Operating Committee and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, outlined the organization's vision for the project. "Healthcare forms a cornerstone of our social commitment, particularly serving vulnerable populations across Indian cities and villages," Gorrepati explained. "By supporting this centre, we're working to make advanced care available to patients with complex eye-brain conditions that currently lack adequate resources. We believe this will help create a national centre of excellence combining patient treatment, professional development, and scientific investigation with lasting benefits."
The facility is projected to serve over 10,000 patients annually through consultations, diagnostic procedures, and ongoing treatment. Beyond direct patient care, the centre will function as a knowledge-building platform through seminars and workshops designed to enhance regional expertise and address the shortage of specialists in neuro-ophthalmology across India. The centre will also focus on developing and refining genetic testing approaches and treatment protocols for eye-brain conditions through collaborative research efforts.
