Centre Orders Telangana to Address Environmental Damage Near KBR Park

Hyderabad: In a significant development, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has instructed the Telangana Forest Department to act urgently on reports of environmental degradation affecting the Chiran Kunta–KBR region here.
The directive came after rights lawyer Rama Rao Immaneni submitted a formal complaint documenting what he described as extensive ecological destruction occurring within the HIC project area. The Ministry has now sought a detailed action taken report from state officials and mandated that the findings be communicated back to Immaneni.
Immaneni characterized Chiran Kunta as a historically significant landmark bearing connections to the Nizam's era. He emphasized the critical importance of preserving the biodiversity that thrives in proximity to Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park, noting that the area harbours diverse plant and animal species requiring urgent protective intervention.
The lawyer has also called for KBR Park to be redesignated as "Prince Mukarram Jah Park," arguing this would appropriately honour Hyderabad's cultural heritage and historical significance.
Environmental activists have voiced frustration with what they characterize as the state government's persistent disregard for ecological concerns in the locality. They have pointed to earlier pronouncements by the Supreme Court on environmental safeguarding in the vicinity of the park, underscoring the legal precedent for protection measures.
The activists are pressing authorities to implement swift conservation initiatives aimed at preserving Hyderabad's natural environment and ecological resources.
