India and Denmark Launch Joint Arbitration Corridor to Support Growing Trade Ties

India and Denmark have jointly inaugurated a new arbitration corridor designed to provide a neutral and efficient framework for resolving disputes between businesses operating across both nations. The formal launch took place at the Embassy of India in Copenhagen, where representatives from the Danish Institute of Arbitration, the Indo-Danish Business Council, and Trust Legal, Advocates & Consultants signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding to establish the initiative.

The move arrives as bilateral trade between the two countries stands at USD 6.1 billion and continues to grow. Officials have positioned the Corridor as a streamlined alternative to conventional litigation, offering Indian and Danish enterprises a dedicated mechanism tailored to their commercial needs.

The timing carries particular diplomatic significance, coinciding with Prime Minister Modi's planned five-nation European tour and the upcoming 3rd India Nordic Summit scheduled for Oslo. With the India-EU Free Trade Agreement finalized in January 2026—creating a trade zone encompassing two billion people—and India-Nordic bilateral commerce already valued at USD 19 billion, the Corridor provides essential legal infrastructure to support this scale of economic activity.

The launch ceremony drew participation from H.E. Manish Prabhat, India's Ambassador to Denmark; H.E. Freddy Svane, Retired Ambassador of Denmark to India and Chair of the Indo-Danish Business Council; and Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President of the Society of Indian Law Firms and IDBC Chair. Håkun Djurhuus, Chairman of the Danish Institute of Arbitration, and Dr. Sasmit Patra, Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, also attended the event alongside senior officials from partner institutions.

Ambassador Prabhat characterized the initiative as "not only a vision; it is an opportunity for both nations," underscoring the diplomatic weight of the partnership. Freddy Svane described the memorandum as "not only a piece of paper" but "an expressway" that strengthens ties between India and Denmark.

Dr. Bhasin emphasized the commercial imperative behind the development, stating that "when disputes find fair resolution, trade flourishes. This Corridor brings Copenhagen and Delhi closer than ever, because with USD 19 billion in India-Nordic trade, a solid dispute resolution mechanism is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity."

Sudhir Mishra, Managing Partner and Founder of Trust Legal, acknowledged the collaborative effort required to establish the framework, noting that the initiative reflects "years of quiet work by many committed individuals and institutions."

Under the terms of the agreement, the participating organizations will jointly develop standardized arbitration clauses and alternative dispute resolution policies applicable to Indo-Danish commercial transactions. The framework also encompasses capacity-building programmes and training initiatives for arbitrators, alongside research and guidance materials targeting startups, small and medium enterprises, and cross-border investors operating between the two countries.
