BRS MLC Challenges Telangana on Financial Management, Cites CAG Report

Hyderabad: Opposition MLC Dasoju Sravan Kumar has launched a sharp critique of the Telangana government's financial stewardship, contending that the Congress-led administration is promoting misleading narratives around "Telangana Rising" and aspirations for a "$3 Trillion economy."
In a letter directed to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Sravan Kumar drew heavily on the Comptroller and Auditor General report covering 2025-26 to substantiate his claims of revenue deficits, unchecked debt accumulation, and institutional lapses within state administration.
According to the BRS leader's assessment, the state achieved revenue receipts of Rs 1.81 lakh crore, falling significantly short of the budgeted projection of Rs 2.29 lakh crore—a gap he characterised as indicative of systemic revenue collection failure.
Sravan Kumar further highlighted underperformance across multiple revenue streams, including land-based income, excise duties, stamp collections, and registration fees, in addition to shortcomings in non-tax revenue generation.
The opposition politician voiced particular concern regarding the government's borrowing practices, alleging that authorities surpassed the limit sanctioned by the legislature. The state raised Rs 77,762 crore against an approved ceiling of Rs 54,009 crore, he noted, raising questions about fiscal discipline.
Characterising the financial projections tabled for 2026-27 as unrealistic, Sravan Kumar warned that such overambitious forecasting compounds Telangana's mounting debt obligations.
He additionally contended that the state fell short in securing anticipated assistance from the central government, receiving merely 45.75 per cent of the projected grants-in-aid from New Delhi.
Calling for enhanced accountability, Sravan Kumar pressed the Chief Minister to furnish comprehensive details on the state's fiscal standing and to clarify the reasons behind the expanding revenue shortfall.
