Hyderabad: In a major recruitment milestone, Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha presented appointment letters to 1,919 nursing officers who have been hired by the Health Department. The distribution ceremony was held at the grounds of Osmania Medical College in Koti.

The event drew prominent attendees including Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, MP Anil Kumar Yadav, MLCs Addanki Dayakar and Mirza Rahmath Baig, alongside top officials from the Health Department.

During his address, the minister took the opportunity to mark International Nurses Day by saluting the nursing profession. He offered his congratulations to the newly appointed nursing officers and their families on securing positions in government service.

"Nursing transcends being merely an occupation—it represents a calling to contribute to human welfare," the minister stated. He highlighted how nurses not only administer medical treatment but also provide patients with emotional reassurance and confidence during their recovery.

Drawing on historical precedent, the minister invoked the legacy of Florence Nightingale, encouraging the newly recruited nurses to emulate her commitment to service and professional standards.

The minister acknowledged the extraordinary efforts of nurses during the COVID-19 crisis, noting that their sacrifices remain etched in public memory. He underscored the government's commitment to strengthening the public health infrastructure by prioritizing the filling of vacant positions across government hospitals, having appointed approximately 13,000 personnel over the preceding two-and-a-half years.

The latest nursing recruitment represents part of a broader expansion drive. Roughly 9,000 nursing positions have been filled during the same period, with the government actively processing applications for an additional 5,000 posts. The Health Department is preparing to announce results for approximately 2,000 Auxiliary Nursing Midwife (ANM) positions in the near term, while finalizing recruitment procedures for 732 pharmacist vacancies.

Beyond recruitment, the government has expanded educational capacity for the profession. Over the past two years, 16 new nursing colleges have been established, creating 960 additional Bachelor of Science in Nursing seats. To enhance global employment prospects, nursing colleges are now offering instruction in English, German, and Japanese.

The minister also announced plans to establish a dedicated Nursing Directorate to support the professional growth and welfare of nursing staff across the state.
