Sanskrit University Named After Mallinatha Suri Proposed for Medak District

Hyderabad — A significant step toward reviving Sanskrit scholarship in Telangana has been initiated following discussions between State Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha and a delegation of Sanskrit scholars and language experts. The focus of their meeting was to explore the establishment of a Sanskrit university bearing the name of the celebrated scholar Mallinatha Suri in Medak district.
The delegation, which was headed by K.V. Ramana Chary, a former advisor to the State government, brought together leading Sanskrit scholars and language specialists to engage with the Minister on the proposal.
The proposed institution would be located in Kolcharam, the birthplace of Mallinatha Suri, marking a symbolic connection to the region's scholarly heritage. During the meeting, participants emphasized the critical importance of safeguarding and promoting the Sanskrit language among younger generations at a time when classical languages face declining interest.
Rajanarasimha reviewed the existing frameworks established by both the Central and State governments for setting up Sanskrit universities across India. He engaged the delegation in comprehensive discussions about strategies to strengthen Sanskrit language and literature education, and actively sought their input and recommendations on the matter.
The scholars highlighted Mallinatha Suri's significant contributions to Sanskrit scholarship, noting his role in making classical literary works more accessible through his detailed commentaries on major epics including Meghasandesam, Kumarasambhavam, and Raghuvamsam. They made a compelling case for naming the university after Mallinatha Suri as a tribute to his enduring legacy in advancing Sanskrit studies.
The Minister responded favourably to the proposal, expressing the view that efforts should be undertaken to restore Sanskrit to its former prominence and prestige. He further committed to bringing the matter before Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for consideration at the government level.
