Cyberabad Police Crack Down on Drunk Driving, Apprehend 300 Over Weekend

Hyderabad's Cyberabad Traffic Police intensified their crackdown on impaired driving this past weekend, registering cases against 300 motorists as part of a targeted enforcement operation. The department cautioned that those responsible for fatal collisions while under the influence of alcohol would face serious criminal charges.

The enforcement action resulted in charges against a diverse range of road users: 259 two-wheeler riders, 34 four-wheeler operators, six auto-rickshaw drivers, and a single heavy vehicle driver. Each of the apprehended individuals will appear before judicial authorities.

Blood alcohol concentration testing revealed varying levels of intoxication among those detained. The largest group—245 offenders—measured between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. A further 30 individuals registered readings of 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, while 25 drivers showed concentrations ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.

Authorities emphasised that operating a vehicle while intoxicated represents a grave violation that endangers public safety. Officials urged all road users to refrain from drunk driving to safeguard both themselves and others.

Drivers found operating vehicles in an intoxicated state and causing fatal accidents face prosecution under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which addresses culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This provision carries penalties of up to 10 years in prison and monetary fines, with sentencing determined by specific case circumstances.

Recent court outcomes demonstrate the consequences of such violations. During the week of June 22 to June 27, courts concluded proceedings in 251 drunk driving matters, with all 251 defendants receiving fines.

The traffic police department indicated that similar enforcement initiatives will continue as part of their ongoing commitment to reducing road accidents and promoting compliance with traffic safety regulations.
