Cyberabad Police Arrest 279 Drunk Drivers in Weekend Enforcement Operation

Hyderabad — A targeted enforcement campaign by Cyberabad Traffic Police resulted in the booking of 279 drunk driving offenders over the weekend as authorities intensify their push to reduce intoxicated driving and enhance road safety in the commissionerate.

The special operation focused on identifying and prosecuting individuals operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. Police confirmed that every person detained during the drive would be presented before judicial authorities for legal proceedings.

Two-wheeler operators represented the largest category of violators, with 228 cases registered against riders of motorcycles and scooters. The enforcement action also resulted in charges against 43 four-wheeler drivers and eight auto-rickshaw operators. Notably, no commercial heavy vehicle drivers were found to have committed violations during the campaign.

Among those apprehended, 230 individuals recorded Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) measurements between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. A further 33 offenders tested at BAC levels ranging from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, while 16 individuals registered BAC concentrations between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml.

Cyberabad Police emphasized that operating a vehicle while intoxicated constitutes a serious criminal offence. Authorities cautioned that individuals responsible for fatal accidents while driving in an inebriated state face prosecution under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which addresses culpable homicide not constituting murder.

This provision carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment coupled with financial penalties. Police appealed to motorists to refrain from driving after consuming alcohol and to adhere strictly to road safety protocols.

Recent court data revealed that 622 drunk driving cases were concluded between June 15 and June 20. Among these disposals, one individual received a combination of fines and community service, while 621 offenders were sentenced to fines alone. During this period, no offender received a combined sentence of imprisonment and financial penalty.
