Hyderabad's Cyberabad Traffic Police intensified enforcement measures against impaired driving over the weekend, resulting in 300 arrests across the commissionerate jurisdiction. Those apprehended are slated to face judicial proceedings.

The enforcement operation revealed a stark pattern in traffic violations. Two-wheeler operators dominated the violation statistics, accounting for 253 cases. Three-wheeler drivers contributed nine cases to the tally, while four-wheeler operators were responsible for 38 violations. Heavy vehicle operators escaped charges during the drive.

Blood alcohol concentration measurements formed the basis for categorising the offenders. The majority—232 individuals—registered BAC readings between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. A second group of 35 offenders fell within the 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml range. The remaining 33 individuals recorded BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 550 mg/100 ml.

Police authorities underscored the gravity of operating vehicles under alcohol's influence, warning that such conduct constitutes a serious criminal offence with potential for severe consequences, particularly when fatal accidents occur. Should an intoxicated driver cause a death, authorities indicated they would invoke Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which addresses culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This provision carries imprisonment of up to 10 years alongside monetary penalties.

In related developments, courts disposed of 96 drunk driving cases during the week spanning 11 May to 16 May 2026. Of these, seven individuals received custodial sentences coupled with financial penalties, while two were directed to pay fines and undertake community service. The remaining 87 offenders faced fines alone.
