BJP's Ramchander Rao Defends Voter Roll Review Process Against Congress Criticism

Telangana's BJP chief N. Ramchander Rao has pushed back against Congress accusations that the Special Intensive Revision process affected recent election outcomes, characterising such claims as politically driven and damaging to democratic institutions.

Speaking in Karimnagar on Saturday, Rao took issue with remarks from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and stood by the ongoing voter roll revision exercise. He emphasised that the process operates within constitutional parameters and carries the backing of both the Election Commission of India and the judiciary.

Rao contended that the Congress selectively questions electoral procedures only when faced with poll defeats, while overlooking these same mechanisms following electoral victories. He urged political parties to demonstrate support for institutional frameworks rather than undermining them when results prove unfavourable.

The BJP leader highlighted the scale of the verification effort, noting that nearly 57 crore voters have already undergone verification across India. An additional 37 crore voters are currently in the verification pipeline as part of the Special Intensive Revision initiative.

Rao pointed out that all political organisations field Booth Level Agents to participate in the exercise, positioning this as evidence of broad institutional involvement. He appealed to parties to work constructively with election authorities to maintain accurate and current voter registrations.

The BJP president also underscored the importance of preventing unqualified individuals, particularly illegal foreign nationals, from appearing on electoral rolls. He framed safeguarding voter list accuracy as vital to preserving the integrity of India's democratic system.
