Cognizant Posts Solid Q1 Growth Amid Strategic AI Push and Project Leap Initiative

April 29, 2026

Cognizant, the technology services and AI solutions provider, unveiled its opening quarter performance for 2026, demonstrating resilience in navigating a challenging economic landscape.

The company generated $5.413 billion in revenue during the first quarter, reflecting 5.8% expansion compared to the prior-year period. On a constant-currency basis, growth reached 3.9%. The Financial Services sector emerged as a particular strength, contributing meaningfully to the quarter's performance.

Chief Executive Officer Ravi Kumar S emphasized the company's positioning in the market: "We believe our AI builder strategy, deep industry expertise and scaled partnership ecosystem uniquely position us to bridge the 'AI Velocity Gap' by helping clients convert their significant AI investments into tangible business outcomes."

Profitability and Shareholder Returns

GAAP operating margin contracted to 15.6% from 16.7% year-over-year, though adjusted operating margin held steady at 15.6% versus 15.5% in the comparable quarter. Diluted earnings per share on a GAAP basis reached $1.39, up from $1.34, while adjusted diluted EPS came in at $1.40 compared to $1.23 previously.

During the quarter, Cognizant repurchased 6.3 million shares for $427 million. The company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.33 per share, payable on May 27, 2026, to shareholders on record as of May 18, 2026. Approximately $1.5 billion remains available under the current share repurchase authorization.

Bookings and Deal Pipeline

Bookings activity underscored client confidence, with first-quarter bookings climbing 21% annually. Over a trailing twelve-month basis, bookings increased 11% to reach $29.6 billion, translating to a book-to-bill ratio of approximately 1.4x.

The company secured seven large deals—those valued at $100 million or more in total contract value—during the period, including one mega deal exceeding $500 million. Large deal total contract value expanded over 70% year-over-year.

Workforce Metrics

Headcount expanded to 357,600 as of March 31, 2026, representing an increase of 21,300 employees from the year-ago quarter and 6,000 from the prior quarter. Voluntary attrition in tech services remained stable at 12.3% on a trailing-twelve-month basis, consistent with the prior quarter and flat compared to the prior-year period.

Project Leap and Operational Transformation

In a strategic move to reshape its operating model, Cognizant introduced Project Leap, a comprehensive transformation program focused on accelerating investments in integrated offerings, AI capabilities, and partnerships. The initiative targets in-year savings of $200 million to $300 million in 2026 through workforce optimization, AI-enabled productivity enhancements, and technology footprint streamlining.

The program is expected to generate charges of $230 million to $320 million, comprising $200 million to $270 million in employee severance and related personnel costs and $30 million to $50 million in other charges, substantially all incurred during 2026.

Reflecting the expected benefits of Project Leap, the company elevated its full-year 2026 adjusted operating margin guidance to expansion of 20 to 40 basis points, up from the previous guidance of 10 to 30 basis points, bringing expectations in line with long-term margin expansion targets.

Forward Guidance

For the second quarter of 2026, Cognizant projects revenue between $5.45 billion and $5.52 billion, representing 3.8% to 5.3% growth, or 3.2% to 4.7% in constant currency.

Full-year 2026 revenue is anticipated to range from $22.11 billion to $22.64 billion, reflecting growth of 4.8% to 7.3%, or 4.0% to 6.5% in constant currency. Adjusted operating margin for the full year is expected to approximate 16.0% to 16.2%, while adjusted diluted EPS is forecasted between $5.63 and $5.77, representing 7% to 9% growth.

Strategic Partnerships and Capabilities

Cognizant has strengthened its market position through several high-profile partnerships and client wins. The company joined J.P. Morgan's Payments Consultant Implementation Program, signed a three-year strategic engagement with UAE-based DAMAC Group to modernize IT operations, and expanded its relationship with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a global shipping and logistics provider.

The company was selected by OpenAI as a partner to scale Codex adoption among enterprise clients and has been designated a Diamond partner by Google Cloud, the highest tier in the partner program. Cognizant is also collaborating with Palantir to accelerate AI-driven modernization initiatives across healthcare and enterprise operations.

Technology and Innovation

Cognizant's AI Lab received three new U.S. patents, bringing its total to 65 domestically and 88 globally. Recent research publications from the lab detail advances in fine-tuning large language models using evolution strategies to enhance reasoning capabilities while reducing computational requirements.

The company launched Cognizant AI Factory, an enterprise-grade offering powered by Dell Technologies and NVIDIA infrastructure, featuring proprietary Fractional GPU technology for secure, isolated computing resources. Additionally, Cognizant introduced Skillspring, a conversational learning platform designed to cultivate AI-ready talent at scale across organizations.
