Singareni Ramps Up Monsoon Preparations as Coal Output Faces Weather Challenges

Hyderabad — As forecasters predict the southwest monsoon will arrive within the next 10 days, Singareni Collieries Company Limited's leadership has intensified preparations to shield coal production from weather-related setbacks.

Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti, the company's Chairman and Managing Director, convened a meeting with General Managers from all operational areas on Saturday to chart a strategy for maintaining steady coal supplies to thermal power stations throughout the monsoon months. The session was organised in response to directives from both state and central government authorities emphasising the importance of sustained coal availability during the wet season.

The challenge facing India's largest coal producer is substantial. Nearly 95 per cent of Singareni's output originates from open-pit mining operations, which become particularly vulnerable during heavy rainfall when water accumulation can bring production to a standstill. To mitigate this risk, the company has already positioned more than 100 high-capacity pumps and motors across its open-pit sites for water removal operations.

Dr. Jyoti instructed area management teams to secure supplementary pumping units—both from within company resources and external suppliers—to prevent water pooling near coal and overburden extraction zones. He also emphasised the need to reinforce transport routes and ensure ready availability of dewatering machinery.

At the Corporate Office level, the CMD initiated procurement procedures to acquire additional pumping equipment through the tendering process. Regional managers received instructions to maintain vigilant tracking of meteorological forecasts and to implement their respective monsoon contingency plans.

Particular attention was directed toward managers overseeing open-pit mines that experienced significant output declines during rainfall events in the preceding two years, with Dr. Jyoti urging heightened caution as the rainy season approaches.

The production imperative has taken on added urgency. Global developments have driven up electricity demand, intensifying pressure on thermal generating stations that depend on Singareni through fuel supply agreements. The CMD underscored that maximising coal extraction before monsoon onset becomes critical—a strong first-quarter performance would provide a buffer against anticipated losses during months of heavy precipitation.

Dr. Jyoti reviewed performance metrics across all regions, examining coal extraction rates, hauling operations, and overburden removal figures for the current financial year. He instructed officials to optimise the deployment of heavy equipment and workforce to achieve maximum productivity before weather conditions deteriorate.
