Chennai Embraces Water-Rich Fruits as Summer Heat Intensifies; Instamart Data Reveals National Cooling Trends

April 29, 2026

Chennai's summer shopping baskets tell a clear story: residents are prioritising hydrating fruits to cope with the season's intensity. Muskmelon and watermelon have become the mainstays of the city's summer carts, reflecting a practical approach to combating heat through water-rich produce.

Across India, quick commerce platforms are witnessing unprecedented demand spikes as temperatures soar. According to Instamart's Summer Trends 2026 report, consumption patterns reveal not merely seasonal preferences but established rituals. As March and April brought escalating temperatures, shopping surged dramatically across multiple categories, with certain products recording growth of up to 300% on a week-to-week basis.

Fruits, cold coffee, carbonated beverages, and ice lollies experienced sharp increases in orders. Cooling appliances such as fans saw growth exceeding 280%, while sunglasses registered a remarkable 650% year-on-year expansion.

Peak Summer Spending Across Cities

Individual shopping patterns highlight regional variations in summer consumption. In Hyderabad, the highest summer basket value reached ₹11,000, combining ice cream, mangoes, refreshing drinks, and buttermilk. Bengaluru's top summer shopper similarly crossed ₹11,000, purchasing cold coffee, buttermilk, mangoes, ice cream, and yogurt.

Guntur emerged with particularly high summer spending, with one user's basket reaching ₹15,005, driven largely by energy drinks and rechargeable portable fans. A shopper in Central Goa spent ₹11,672 accumulating coconut water, kulfi, mangoes, and cool beverages. Kolkata's leading summer consumer invested over ₹10,600 in coconut water, mangoes, yogurt, and ice cream.

The Curd Phenomenon

Curd has emerged as the unexpected champion of summer quick commerce, approaching the popularity levels of cold drinks and ice cream combined. Six of the ten most-ordered items during summer are curd-based products, while fresh fruits including watermelon and muskmelon continue their upward trajectory. This trend has crystallised into the observation that "Dahi is dominating summer baskets," with yogurt-based products reshaping summer consumption patterns.

The 9 PM Ice Cream Hour

A distinct temporal pattern has emerged in ice cream consumption. The 9 PM hour represents India's peak moment for ice cream purchases, with demand more than doubling between 6 and 9 PM and climbing further during weekends. Family-sized containers lead the category, while chocolate-flavoured varieties account for roughly one in four ice cream orders nationally.

Regional Ice Cream Preferences

While Bengaluru leads the nation in overall ice cream consumption, followed by Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune, smaller cities are revealing themselves as surprisingly enthusiastic consumers. Central Goa, Thrissur, Thiruvalla, Nagercoil, and Manipal are recording some of the highest per-user order volumes, suggesting that summer cooling rituals transcend metropolitan boundaries.

Mango Varieties and Growing Regions

Sindhu has established itself as India's most frequently ordered mango variety, surpassing Banganapalli and raw mangoes. The fastest expansion in mango orders originates from Kozhikode, Madurai, Trichy, Vizag, and Nellore, though Bengaluru maintains the highest aggregate mango demand nationally.

Beverage Evolution

The summer beverage landscape is shifting beyond traditional colas. Jeera masala soda, cold coffee, and café-style coolers are gaining mainstream traction. Jeera soda experienced 900% growth in March alone, while cold coffee rose nearly 700%. Coconut water, buttermilk, lassi, and milkshakes similarly demonstrated robust growth trajectories. Across beverage categories, demand concentrates between 6 and 9 PM, aligning with the broader evening consumption peak observed throughout summer shopping patterns.
