Candlelight Concert Series Transforms Classical Music Accessibility Across India
Bangalore: The Candlelight concert series, an international initiative by Live Your City, is fundamentally altering the landscape of classical music consumption in India by presenting the art form in a more sociable, relatable, and welcoming manner. Recent data gathered from Indian audiences reveals a notable transformation in how people are discovering and enjoying classical performances, with Candlelight positioning itself as a significant gateway for both newcomers and seasoned listeners alike.
The numbers paint a compelling picture. Four out of five attendees—precisely 83%—are encountering Candlelight for the first time, demonstrating its powerful draw among audiences new to such experiences. Even more significantly, 84% of these attendees indicate they intend to explore additional classical music concerts moving forward, establishing the format as an effective bridge into the broader world of classical performance.
Speaking to this trend, Pranjal Bengwani, India Lead for Candlelight, emphasised the series' role in broadening access. "Candlelight is making classical music more accessible by presenting it in a way that feels familiar and inviting," Bengwani stated. "By combining well-loved music with an immersive atmosphere, it is attracting more first-time attendees and encouraging them to continue their journey with live classical performances."
The appeal of recognisable repertoire emerges as a crucial factor in this engagement. Close to 80% of attendees identify the musical selection as their primary motivation for attending, reflecting a strong preference for compositions that resonate with listeners. When combined with the intimate, candlelit ambiance, this familiarity transforms classical music into something that feels contemporary and relevant rather than distant and formal.
Beyond individual consumption, Candlelight is establishing itself as a distinctly social and cultural phenomenon in India. Whether experienced as a romantic outing, a gathering among friends, or a family occasion, the format is redefining classical music from its traditionally austere presentation into something more participatory, inclusive, and experientially rich.
These developments collectively underscore how Candlelight is democratising classical music access throughout India—by reducing the psychological and experiential barriers to entry, fostering connection through recognisable programming, and cultivating spaces where audiences feel encouraged to deepen their engagement with the genre.
