Navigating the Product Management Career Path: Why Preparation Remains a Critical Challenge in 2026

May 11, 2026

Product management has become increasingly central to organisational strategy as companies pursue product-led growth and digital transformation initiatives. However, a significant mismatch exists between market demand and professional readiness. According to the McKinsey & Company Project Management Index from 2025, fewer than half of product managers report feeling equipped for their responsibilities, pointing to a substantial skills deficit in the field.

The challenge extends beyond individual preparedness. The Deloitte Digital Project Management 2025 report reveals that 43% of new product launches fall short of business objectives due to implementation shortcomings. This gap between aspiration and execution underscores a fundamental problem: while organisations actively seek product talent, the pathways for entering or advancing within product management remain poorly defined for many professionals.

Key Obstacles to Entry and Growth

Professionals attempting to break into or progress within product management encounter several recurring hurdles. These include limited exposure to hands-on work in functioning product environments, confusion about the multifaceted skill sets spanning business acumen, technical knowledge, and user experience understanding, and the absence of clear progression routes. Additionally, many struggle to translate theoretical product concepts—such as data-informed choices, stakeholder coordination, and product thinking—into practical application.

Structured Learning as a Solution

To address these gaps, ISB Online, the digital learning division of the Indian School of Business, has developed two distinct programmes tailored to different career stages and professional goals. Both offerings emphasise practical, project-based instruction designed to equip participants with industry-relevant capabilities.

The 16-Week Product Management Programme

The shorter pathway targets professionals in early to mid-career positions seeking entry into product management or wishing to strengthen their foundational skills. Having completed 36 cohorts with more than 7,000 participants, this programme emphasises building capabilities immediately applicable to job requirements.

The curriculum guides learners through defining product-market fit using customer research and user insights, developing minimum viable products, creating product roadmaps, and conducting experiments through product metrics and A/B testing. The programme also incorporates generative artificial intelligence into routine product functions including research, data analysis, and decision prioritisation. Instruction combines interactive sessions, expert-led workshops, real-world case analysis, and a final capstone project.

Beginning June 30, 2026, the 16-week programme carries a fee of INR 1,59,900 plus applicable taxes.

Graduates have reported meaningful outcomes. Ankur Shrivastava, holding a staff product manager position at a major technology corporation, highlighted how the programme enabled him to develop systematic approaches to strategy formulation, pricing structures, and roadmap development, alongside deepened comprehension of consumer insights and artificial intelligence applications. Ayushi Joshi, serving as vice president at a prominent global financial services firm, credited the experience with enhancing her grasp of product planning, pricing mechanics, and market launch procedures through immersive, industry-relevant instruction.

The 28-Week Professional Certificate

The extended programme targets seasoned professionals pursuing advanced expertise and sustained advancement toward product leadership roles. Now in its 21st iteration, this offering concentrates on building sophisticated and strategic-level capabilities.

Participants develop comprehensive product strategies applicable across different markets and distribution channels. The curriculum encompasses product-led growth methodologies, pricing frameworks, business model innovation, and advanced technical product management. Instruction emphasises the strategic application of artificial intelligence and generative AI throughout the product lifecycle—from initial discovery through scaling phases. Significant emphasis falls on managing diverse stakeholder relationships and leveraging data to inform strategic choices, delivered through intensive projects, industry examples, and specialised workshops.

Commencing June 30, 2026, the 28-week certificate programme is priced at INR 2,59,900 before taxes.

Programme alumni have emphasised its practical value. Subramanian K, an engineer at a prominent global media and technology firm, noted that the experience illuminated how product teams make prioritisation decisions and generate value independent of purely technical considerations. Pramod Vashist, directing customer relationship management at a global education services provider, underscored the programme's effective integration of conceptual foundations with real-world scenarios, alongside the collaborative learning environment among peer participants.

Academic Credentials and Network Access

Both programmes draw on ISB's internationally respected teaching faculty and operate within a robust academic framework. The institution holds the top ranking in India, second position across Asia, and twelfth globally according to the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2026. This standing ensures that learning incorporates research-informed perspectives grounded in industry relevance. Upon completion, participants receive ISB Online Alumni designation and entry into a worldwide network of professional contacts.

The Path Forward

As product management disciplines continue to transform, systematic professional development has become indispensable. Those who acquire appropriate competencies under expert mentorship find themselves better positioned to manage industry evolution. ISB Online's offerings present transparent, credible options for those seeking professional clarity, career transitions into product management, or advancement toward executive-level positions within the field.
