Breakthrough, an international organisation focused on transforming social norms and combating gender-based violence, has unveiled its latest documentary film, From Fields to Flight, which premiered at the AmDocs Film Festival this month.

The 15-minute production, helmed by director Ipshita Bhattacharyya, tells the story of Babita, a young woman from rural Uttar Pradesh who defied entrenched social expectations to become a qualified drone pilot. The film documents her path from confronting restrictive gender norms to achieving economic self-sufficiency, weaving together themes of perseverance, individual strength, and optimism.

Babita's experience represents the vast reservoir of untapped capability among young women throughout India who harbour dreams of forging their own independent paths forward.

"Women across the world face invisible barriers both in society and within their homes," director Bhattacharyya reflected on her work. "It is essential to create spaces where their voices can be heard. Sharing Babita's story has been incredibly fulfilling, and I hope it encourages audiences to listen, support, and act towards building a gender-equal society."

Babita herself spoke candidly about her transformation. "I never imagined traveling alone, learning advanced technology like drone operation, or earning independently," she said. "This film represents not just my story, but the journey of many girls like me who need only opportunity and support to move forward."

The documentary emerged through the Solution Storytelling Grant programme administered jointly by the Skoll Foundation and Video Consortium, positioning it as more than conventional narrative filmmaking. Instead, it maps concrete avenues for transformation, particularly benefiting young women in isolated and resource-constrained regions.

Pooja Pande, Director of Media and Digital initiatives at Breakthrough, underscored the wider significance of Babita's narrative. "When Babita chooses a different path, she opens doors for many others. Her journey inspires those around her to reimagine possibilities. From Fields to Flight reflects the kind of change Breakthrough strives to create every day."

The Bengaluru screening drew together representatives from journalism, social development sectors, and philanthropic institutions. Following the film's showing, a panel discussion featuring Babita, Bhattacharyya, and Pande facilitated substantive exchanges on gender parity, skill acquisition, and economic access for marginalised communities.
