The BIMSTEC region encompasses over 1.7 billion people with a combined economic output surpassing $5 trillion, positioning it as one of the world's most strategically important and dynamic zones. Steeped in Buddhist and Hindu civilizational traditions, the region combines cultural richness with substantial economic potential. However, the BIMSTEC nations face persistent challenges including political volatility, emigration of talented professionals, and geopolitical tensions. This landscape becomes particularly significant given that the region hosts one of the planet's youngest demographic profiles, making the development of capable youth leaders an urgent priority.

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and the Art of Living have designated BIMSTEC as a key focus area for leadership advancement and change-making. They have developed a comprehensive strategy emphasizing young people's empowerment, psychological strength, and cooperative regional development.

On April 25, 2026, the Art of Living partnered with India's Ministry of External Affairs to inaugurate a six-day Youth Leadership Exchange Program in Bengaluru. Beyond a conventional conference, this undertaking demonstrates Gurudev's sustained dedication to nurturing principled leaders. The program convenes promising young leaders and governance specialists from across the BIMSTEC member nations and serves as the launching point for a three-to-four-month guided development process. Under joint direction from the Art of Living and the Ministry of External Affairs, participants will work to convert creative solutions into practical community-level initiatives.

Building lasting connections grounded in historical commonalities and shared goals forms the foundation for BIMSTEC's trajectory. Drawing from the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—all of humanity forms one interconnected family—the exchange initiative aims to discover capable young leaders and provide them with comprehensive personal growth resources. Through cultivating emotional awareness, psychological wellness, and openness to diverse perspectives, the program recognizes that authentic leadership emerges from personal understanding and dedication to broader human welfare.

Speaking to the assembled young leaders, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar encouraged them to discover their concealed capabilities and assume responsibility for steering the region forward. He observed that comparable to how BIMSTEC's considerable strengths remain underutilized because of weak inter-regional commerce and infrastructure, individuals frequently overlook their own dormant potential. Through inner exploration and personal growth, young people can function as drivers of transformative community change.

The program's leadership curriculum rests on four interconnected components: resolving disputes peacefully, fostering business innovation and entrepreneurial activity, addressing contemporary challenges including artificial intelligence, and drawing on the region's artistic and historical legacy to deepen regional bonds. This comprehensive framework equips emerging leaders to tackle urgent contemporary issues while safeguarding and advancing BIMSTEC's distinctive cultural character.

By combining selfless contribution with leader development, the Art of Living is cultivating leaders who operate from principles of understanding, collective agreement, and human kindness. In a territory endowed with plentiful natural resources, farming productivity, and dynamic young populations, obstacles to advancement frequently stem from internal constraints alongside external barriers. Gurudev's approach fills this void by advancing a leadership philosophy centered on insight, determination, and benevolence.

With approximately 60% of BIMSTEC's inhabitants in the under-35 age bracket, the region confronts a crucial inflection point. The moment presents a significant prospect to reimagine what leadership means through engaged young people positioned to direct BIMSTEC toward lasting advancement. The Youth Leadership Exchange Program exemplifies how the Art of Living is constructing leaders while simultaneously charting the developmental path for an entire geographical region.
