ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Achieves Global First in Ultra-High Strength Welded Pipe Production

Chennai-based ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has marked a significant breakthrough in steelmaking by achieving what no other global manufacturer has accomplished: producing the highest-grade welded pipes used in marine construction at commercial scale. The company has secured certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a respected maritime classification body, validating that its EQ70 grade pipes meet international standards for strength, safety, and performance.
This development carries implications beyond industrial achievement. By manufacturing these specialised pipes domestically, India can reduce dependence on European seamless pipe imports for critical infrastructure. The move aligns with national objectives around self-reliance and economic development, creating opportunities for the country's offshore and engineering sectors to access these components with greater supply certainty, faster delivery, and improved pricing.
EQ70 grade represents the technological frontier of welded pipe engineering. The material delivers a minimum yield strength of 690 megapascals—a measure of how much stress it can withstand before permanent deformation—alongside exceptional resistance to fracture under stress. Pipes of this grade serve demanding roles: supporting the legs of jack-up drilling rigs, forming deepwater pipelines for oil and gas extraction, and anchoring offshore wind installations in challenging marine conditions.
The manufacturing process itself presents formidable technical challenges. Fabricating ultra-high strength welded pipes demands maintaining consistent mechanical properties throughout both the steel base material and the welded joint itself. The Submerged Arc Welding technique employed at the company's flagship facility in Hazira, Gujarat, must ensure structural soundness under the extreme stresses and corrosive environments of deepwater operations. The advantage of these advanced pipes lies in their capacity to perform at thinner gauges and lighter weights without sacrificing structural integrity—a benefit that reduces material costs and installation complexity.
AM/NS India has already begun commercial supply of these pipes to a major domestic oil and gas operator, demonstrating that the production capability has moved beyond laboratory success into industrial-scale manufacturing.
The achievement reflects the technological foundation provided by the company's parent organisations, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, both leaders in advanced steelmaking. The certification from ABS—widely regarded as essential for participation in regulated offshore and marine projects—opens pathways for these pipes to serve international applications beyond India's borders.
By advancing into higher-value segments of steel manufacturing, India strengthens its position in global supply chains for critical infrastructure while building a more resilient domestic industrial base.
