Amazon Strengthens Healthcare and Insurance Protection for 90,000 Indian Delivery Workers

Amazon India has unveiled an expanded suite of health and insurance protections for roughly 90,000 delivery associates operating across its nationwide logistics network. The initiative aims to address both immediate healthcare needs and financial protection against work-related injuries.

The expanded coverage encompasses three key components: outpatient department services for routine medical treatment, inpatient hospitalization support, and disability compensation for both temporary and permanent injuries. These protections extend across all last-mile delivery operations throughout the country.

The specific coverage enhancements include mediclaim insurance increased to ₹1.5 lakh, outpatient expenses now covered up to ₹10,000, and Group Personal Accident coverage expanded to ₹10 lakh. Wellness benefits extend to associates and up to three family members annually, featuring unlimited multilingual virtual doctor consultations and two complimentary in-person outpatient visits per family each year.

Additional support mechanisms include discounted access to diagnostic services, pharmacy purchases, dental care, and eye examinations, alongside resources promoting preventive health and fitness activities. To complement these protections, Amazon has partnered with a third-party insurer to organize nationwide health camps offering free medical assessments to tens of thousands of delivery workers. These camps provide eye examinations, dental evaluations, BMI measurements, and general physician consultations, with associates able to access services by presenting government-issued identification at delivery stations across India.

Salim Memon, Director of Operations at Amazon India, stated: "As we continue to invest in our operations network, infrastructure, and frontline workforce across India, the safety and wellbeing of our delivery associates remain a top priority. We have expanded insurance coverage across OPD, hospitalization, and accident benefits to provide more comprehensive support, and are also rolling out nationwide health camps offering free check-ups and preventive care. These initiatives are part of our recent ₹2,800 crore investment to further strengthen associate well-being and scale our operations infrastructure across the country."

The health camps, which commenced in March this year, have operated across delivery stations in six cities and will extend to metropolitan and Tier II urban centres. These initiatives emphasize proactive health screening and heat-risk assessment, particularly supporting workers during summer months.

This expansion forms part of Amazon India's broader ₹2,800 crore investment commitment aimed at reinforcing associate safety, health, and financial security while developing one of India's most dependable and efficient logistics networks.

Beyond healthcare coverage, Amazon maintains several complementary worker welfare initiatives. Project Ashray operates dedicated rest facilities for delivery associates at high-traffic locations, offering air-conditioned seating, drinking water, electrolytes, sanitation facilities, charging stations, and first-aid supplies—available to workers from any delivery company. The company plans to expand its Ashray centre network to 250 locations in 2026, building on its current 100 centres, with 50 additional centres scheduled to open by the end of May.

The company provides 24/7 emergency assistance including no-cost ambulance services with basic and advanced life support across 730+ cities through a partnership with Dial 4242, supplemented by dedicated emergency helplines. Safety measures incorporate mandatory pre-trip vehicle inspections, real-time weather alerts, defensive driving training during monsoon seasons, and additional rest breaks during extreme heat conditions.

A nationwide road safety awareness programme launched earlier this year reached hundreds of thousands of delivery associates, partners, and truck drivers, emphasizing helmet and seatbelt compliance, speed management, distraction prevention, emergency preparedness, and safe vehicle handling.

Amazon also operates the Pratidhi scholarship programme, providing financial support for higher education to children of delivery associates and partners pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies across various disciplines.

The company's inclusive employment policies include menstrual leave, onsite medical facilities, rest amenities, and sanitary pad dispensing machines in fulfillment centres. Working mothers receive access to daycare facilities, while upskilling opportunities enable associates to pursue internal positions aligned with their career interests.
