India Sends 15 Competitors to Global Skills Challenge 2026 in Australia as Preparation for Shanghai WorldSkills

India has launched its preparations for the prestigious WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai with the departure of Team India for the Global Skills Challenge (GSC) 2026, an international skills simulation event taking place in Australia. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) sent off the 30-member Indian delegation on June 22, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the nation's competitive skilling journey.

The contingent comprises 15 competitors representing India across various skill disciplines, accompanied by 15 expert mentors. The Global Skills Challenge, organised by WorldSkills Australia, functions as a full-scale international rehearsal of the actual WorldSkills Competition environment. Running from 23–29 June 2026, the event is designed to replicate genuine competition conditions and allow participating nations to evaluate their readiness and performance standards.

The simulation will feature four full days of competitive skill contests utilising the internationally recognised Competition Information System (CIS) for evaluation and scoring. Nearly 600 competitors, experts, translators, and officials from WorldSkills Member Nations are expected to participate, providing Team India with extensive exposure to international standards, cutting-edge technologies, and global industry practices.

Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, expressed her confidence in the team's potential. "The Global Skills Challenge 2026 Australia is not merely a competition, but an important opportunity for Team India to gain international experience, sharpen their skills and prepare for the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai," she stated. She urged competitors to work closely with their mentors, maintain focus and discipline, and maximise every learning opportunity available to them.

Shri Arunkumar Pillai, CEO of the National Skill Development Corporation, emphasised the rigorous selection process that brought these candidates to this stage. "Each one of our candidate has earned their place here through a gruelling and highly competitive journey to become among the very best in India," he noted. He described the Australian challenge as "the final stretch before Shanghai," calling for heightened commitment and determination from the competitors.

India's 15 competitors will compete across diverse skill categories reflecting the nation's evolving expertise. These include 3D Digital Game Art, Additive Manufacturing, Automobile Technology, Beauty Therapy, Bricklaying, Cloud Computing, Floristry, Graphic Design Technology, Hairdressing, Health and Social Care, Industrial Mechanics, Painting and Decorating, Restaurant Service, Wall and Floor Tiling, and Web Technologies. This portfolio demonstrates India's strength across advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, creative sectors, construction trades, and service industries.

The Global Skills Challenge provides Team India with multiple strategic advantages ahead of Shanghai. Competitors will gain hands-on experience performing under authentic international competition conditions, strengthen their technical capabilities, and familiarise themselves with global evaluation methodologies. The event also enables extensive benchmarking through interaction with leading competitors and specialists from Europe, East Asia, Oceania, and other participating regions, exposing Indian competitors to advanced equipment environments and diverse competitive approaches.

Officials from the MSDE and National Skill Development Corporation, including Smt. Manisha Sensarma, Senior Economic Advisor, and Smt. Hena Usman, Joint Secretary, were present to bid farewell to the team. India's participation in the Global Skills Challenge underscores the broader objectives of the Skill India Mission to develop a workforce equipped for global competitiveness and elevate India's standing within the international skills ecosystem.
